Fernando Amorebieta was born on 29 March 1985 in Cantaura, State of Anzoátegui (Venezuela) since his parents, both natives of Iurreta (Vizcaya), moved for work reasons to America and Venezuela. At two years of age, Fernando and the family returned to Iurreta and he did not return to Venezuela until he was 22. He began to play in the ikastola de San Miguel of Iurreta, his town, until he entered the Athletic Club’s youth team in Lezama for his training as a professional international football player with the lower categories of the national football team of Spain, where his teammates were players such as Sergio Ramos, David Silva, Roberto Soldado, Raúl Albiol and Fernando Llorente. He formed part of the Spanish national under-19 team that won the championship in the European under-19 of 2004, played in Switzerland.

He debuted with the Athletic Club in the First Division during the 2005/06 season, in which he had an important role. The problems of the defence on the left flank caused him on numerous occasions to abandon his natural position as a central midfielder to occupy the left side. At the end of the 2007-2008 season, several teams of the Premier League showed interest in having Fernando's services, who stated he did not want to leave the red-and-white team. The coach, Joaquín Caparrós, declared before the Eurocup 2008 that Amorebieta was one of the three best central defences of Spain and that he had the maturity "to go to the national team now". After this competition Vicente del Bosque, coach of the Spanish national football team, decided to call him to play a friendly game against Denmark, but Fernando did not get to debut and he wasn't called again. On the other hand, the Venezuelan head coach César Farías travelled to Bilbao to attend a league game between the Athletic Club and the RCD Mallorca, a moment in which he affirmed that he would do "everything that was in his hands" so that Amorebieta could play with the absolute national team of Venezuela. However, Amorebieta, who had expressed his hope to debut with La Vinotinto team, was informed that he could not do so for having been an international under-19 player with Spain and for not having requested the change of national team before he turned 21 years of age, as set forth in the FIFA bylaws.

The year 2009 was an important year for Fernando since he played his 100th match with the Athletic Club, his 100th match in The League, the Final of the King's Cup and the rule was abolished that impeded him from playing with the Venezuelan National Team. Therefore, in August 2010, the procedures were resumed for Amorebieta to debut with the South American country.

In 2010 he received an important offer to sign with the FC Rubin Kazan, champion of the Premiere League of Russia. The Russian team was willing to pay to the Athletic what would have been a resounding cash transfer; however, the player again communicated to the Athletic his desire to remain with the Club and the Basque team rejected the offer. At the end of the 2010-2011 season, there was a change of coach in the Athletic; Joaquín Caparrós, the third coach of the history of the Athletic with more matches, 187, left his position after achieving the objectives for which he was contracted, to be in UEFA, leaving his mark on the history of the club, reconstructing a team without confidence. He was substituted by the coach Marcelo Bielsa, who changed and revolutionised the playing style of the team, reaching the Final of the King's Cup against the Barça, remaining runner-up and it was classified to play the Final of the UEFA Europe League after 35 years without doing so, eliminating the teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Lokomotiv, Manchester United, Schalke 04 and Sporting de Portugal.

In the summer of 2011, Amorebieta placed a telephone call to Farías requesting joining the national team of Venezuela and this was made official on 27 August, debuting against Argentina on 2 September 2011. In October 2011, for the second date of the World Cup Classifications Brazil 2014, Fernando scored his first goal in the minute 61 with the Venezuelan national team, against Argentina; giving Venezuela its first triumph in the qualifying round and its first victory against the Albiceleste in a perfect match in which after its finalization the Argentine technician, Alejandro Sabadella, recognized that "for the first time, I saw a player capable of stopping Messi. Congratulations for Amorebieta,"

He could not play in the pre-season 2012/2013 and the first matches of the League because he was operated on during that summer for a hernia that caused discomfort in the groin and he had to be four weeks without playing and several more to get back into shape and reach the level of the team.

In June 2013, he announces that he is leaving the Athletic in order to join the club of the English Premier League, Fulham FC of London for four seasons.

In his first season he could only play 23 matches.

On 26 April 2014, he made his first goal wearing the Fulham T-shirt against the Hull City in minute 58 of the match and it will go down in history, in the Premiere League as well as in the Vinotinto, since with that goal he became the first Venezuelan to score in the Barclays Premier League.

He begins the Sky Bet Championship 2014-2015 with the Fulham FC and in the middle of the season he is transferred to Middlesbrough FC to fight for the ascension to the Premier League thus beginning a new stage in his professional career. Fernando scored a great goal in the Playoffs against Brentford, although Middlesbrough FC couldn't beat Norwich in the Sky Bet Final at Wembley.

On June, Fernandoi will join his National Team to  play the American Cup 2015 Chile. La Vinotinto is placed in the C group with Brazil, Colombia and Perú, but couldn´t reach the next stage.

2015/16 season started again with changes. Boro renew his transfer on loan from Fulham. Fernando spent six months with Middlesbrough at the top of the league. But Fulham needs to strengthen its defense and request the presence of Fernando into Fulham again. Fernando played the rest of the season with Fulham, achieving permanency of london club into Skybet Championship.

This summer of 2016,  Fernando Amorebieta returns to the Spanish League with Real Sporting.

With the "Boro" Fernando again marks a decisive goal, this time in the qualifying round of the Playoff of ascent, decanting the victory for his team at the last minute. Unfortunately, the rise could not be confirmed in the Wembley Final against Norwich City, the place that gave access to the English First was.
That same summer, Fernando faced another major challenge. Copa America 2015 held in Chile. The Vintotinto was framed in Group C with Brazil, Colombia and Peru but failed to reach the next stage.
The 2015/16 season started again with changes. His performances with Boro took Aitor Karanka club to renew his transfer from Fulham. Fernando spent six months with Middlesbrough at the top of the leaderboard. But Fulham needs to strengthen its defense and away from the relegation led the London club to claim the presence of the player. Fernando was instrumental in achieving permanency of Fulham in the English Skybet.
This summer of 2016, the Real Sporting has backed his move to bolster their squad ahead of the new season. Fernando Amorebieta returns to the Spanish League, where the rojiblancos will wear colors and fight to maintain the status of a team with tradition and history of Real Sporting.
